Q. How can I stop EndNote from assuming that every bracket / parenthesis is an in-text citation?

Is EndNote telling you to insert a citation, every time you have text in a bracket/parenthesis in your text? This happens when the temporary citation delimiters for EndNote are improperly set to parenthesis. Follow these steps to change the settings:

If you are using Windows:

1. Open your document and go to the EndNote toolbar.

2. Click on the small arrow in the corner to the right of the word "Bibliography".

3. Check your "Temporary citation delimiters." If these are set to ( and ), this explains your issue. By setting this, you have told EndNote that everything it sees enclosed within ( and ) is a citation. Change these back to the default, < and >, and then click OK.

4. The Select Matching Reference window WILL come up one last time. Click Ignore All.

If you are using Macintosh:

1. Open your document and go to Tools>EndNote.

2. Click on "Format Bibliography," "Bibliography Settings," or "Configure Bibliography." These all lead to the same tool but are named differently depending on your version of EndNote.

Once you complete these steps, EndNote will stop recognizing all parenthesis as citations.
