The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal food assistance program that provides individuals and families with low incomes with food benefits they can use to purchase groceries. US citizens and certain non-citizens may receive SNAP.

SNAP Cliff Effect Sunset Provision
Thousands of Nebraskans can now take home small increases in income without fear of losing essential food benefits thanks to legislation from 2021 and an extension in 2023. However, there is a sunset, or end planned for the change, in September of 2025. Extending the program or making it permanent will support families and the Nebraska economy – especially while inflation and rising food prices make paying for food harder for everyone.
SNAP Re-Entry
People re-entering our community from prison need to meet their basic needs to successfully reintegrate into their communities. Access to food is key to meeting a most basic need and creating stability. Yet, federal law creates a lifetime ban on food assistance for those with drug felonies in their past. States can eliminate the ban and remove a barrier to successful reintegration while also reducing hunger for the individuals and families affected.
